The Practice of Art

Jay Berrones
silkscreen on paper
27.5x39.25 in
$3,500.00
Jay uses silkscreen as a vehicle to record snapshots of his life much the same way we typically chronicle our lives in our journals. Themes are derived from his everyday chores of being a farrier, wrangler and cook for an outfitting company. Color and repetition are employed as tools to capture an underlying essence of the environment in which these jobs take place, oftentimes becoming redundant but never tiring in their simplistic joy.
The autodidactic nature of Jay's life is a result of insatiable curiosity, hard work and a twinge of feeling trapped. This combination lends to Jay's methods of teaching screen printing which more resembles sharing - both in knowledge and the excitement of self-discovery.

Kid's Chain and Amber Pendant

Having been raised as a kid in Tetonia, I spent a lot of my youth drawing inspiration from the national parks and natural beauty that surrounds us. After earning a BFA from Cooper Union, I initially focusing on painting as a means of discourse. In recent years, I have pivoted my focus into silversmithing, with an interest in the translation of knot making and leather braiding techniques into the materiality of metal work. Some of the youth classes I have taught at the Art Association include plein air, animation, and large scale painting. Teaching the youth of Jackson is a wonderful way to give back to the community,

"Being the kid who struggled with instructions, but thrived at figuring things out, I see the benefits of having to come up with my approach from scratch. While being told step by step instructions can lead to better immediate results, asking the student to decide what their goals are, helping them figure out how to approach it, and then trusting their own evaluation makes for not only better independence, but more intellectual stimulation and joy. It's messy, it can be stressful, and at the end if they want to throw it all, all the power to them, but I know through experience that the memories, and knowledge, that come from the struggle can be called upon for years afterwards when exploring an area where no instructions exist."

In my teaching practice, I lead lessons with patience, remembering that this is students’ first time trying to understand the complexities of their world. My job is to empower students and to give them the tools to tell their worthy stories and use art to develop an understanding of themselves and the world. One of my goals is to give them the language and tools to reflect, process, and communicate emotions, collaborate with others, and advocate for themselves so that they may have agency and a foundation for success in their future lives. I expose students to a diverse range of materials and artists so that they may see themselves in the artwork we analyze. By showing students a variety of artists and artistic approaches, I hope to provide them with an appreciation and empathy for those unlike themselves, and a toolkit in how to approach storytelling. My goal is to build a community in the classroom where students feel comfortable taking risks and sharing their thoughts with their peers. This extends out of the classroom to build meaningful relationships with fellow teachers, parents, and the greater community so that these students have a team to support them as they grow in and out of the studio (Dewey, Efland, 1990). In my personal practice, being isolated from Caribbean Community and family I use art, in this case ceramics, as a way to connect with my heritage.

"I am a ceramic artist, but I love to use all of other art materials as well. I love art since I was young. I always wanted to be an artist. I graduated Seoul Nation University of Technology, my major was a ceramic design. That’s how I start to pottery. Now I’ve been living in Jackson over 7 years. This place gives me a lot of inspiration of nature. I never forget the first time I saw milky way and tons of stars! I am happy to work with wonderful A!A team. I feel so lucky that I can be a part of this team. I love to meet people who love art and they also inspired me. I am not only teaching but learning a lot from it."

Kay Modi
collage and mixed media on panel
12x12 in
$100.00
"Kay Modi has been actively instructing Try-Nights for the Art Association to bring the joy and creativity that she has found when the artist is free to mix media in a painting to expand a textured look. The objective is to have a little fun in the process of a small piece or a large piece of art. She has been creating and collecting papers and objects to place in her paintings to create a more interesting background for night skies, forest layers or story telling. Collage art works permit those that are not confident with paint brushes to still enjoy creating compositions that hold the interest of viewers. It can bring whimsical or powerful messages into art work. Future Try- Nights for Collage may be scheduled for later in the summer or early fall."

Lightner Vase
Alice Pang
stoneware, hair, smoke

"My art practice is a meditation on control and acceptance. I am an obsessive ceramicist, shaping a form or refining a base or polishing a surface for hours and hours and hours. But the longer I hold my breath in intense focus, the harder it is to let go. This is the ever-present tension in my work: pursuing perfectionism versus embracing acceptance. Western raku, a rapid firing technique notorious for its unpredictability, is a teacher of non-attachment and acceptance. Try as I might, I cannot possibly control the outcome, so I must exhale, finally, and let go. The smoke breathes life into the work. It becomes a collaboration with the fire. In accepting its infinite, uncontrollable possibilities, I find a profound sense of liberation. I am deeply grateful for the ceramics community in my home of Jackson, Wyoming, and beyond. Just as clay bears the mark of its maker’s hand, I am shaped by mentors like Rocky Lewycky, Crystal Kamoroff, and Tom Bivins who so freely share their expertise and encouragement. It is with humility and gratitude that I carry on their spirit of openness and generosity as an artist and instructor at the Art Association of Jackson Hole. More of my work is available at instagram.com/eight.fires."

"As a ceramic artist and instructor, my work is informed by the movement and flow of the material. I enjoy creating work that contains an element of organic variation and departs from the inherent mechanical character of the electric wheel. Ceramics studios have been home to me since childhood, and I love bringing new students into the space and helping them discover the joy of working with a tactile medium."

"I started quilting soon after my daughter was born, as I wanted to wrap her into a quilted hug made just for her and have been making quilts ever since. I love experimenting with different colors and textures while creating a quilt for that special person in my life. I've made quilts for others and taught privately in my quilting studio for a few years. I recently started offering classes at the A!A and hope to take you on an exciting textile journey of making your own personal quilted hugs."

Miga Rossetti
acrylic and mixed media on panel
15x15 in
$500.00
"Miga Rossetti’s art embodies a journey of intent and happenstance, where each addition and subtraction of material enriches the narrative, reflecting life's own complexities. She dialogues with the horizon, sky, and landscape in her interpretive landscapes, driven by an earnest connection to the dramatic, ever-changing environments she portrays. Her abstract mixed media works, using collaged story elements, reveal lived experiences. In one painting, she mirrors the detailed essence of a Google map of Paris, transforming a simple cartographic tool into a canvas of personal expression and narrative. Working impulsively on varied substrates, the artist employs acrylic paint, plaster, collage, and mixed media. Materials are applied urgently with fingers, brushes, rollers, credit cards, and scrapers, reflecting a life lived messily, unconventionally, yet boldly. Initial high-contrast shapes, colors, and lines evolve through layering and excavation, building rich, textured surfaces where movement is palpable, capturing the subtle clues and dynamic energy of the environment."

At a very young age I knew I wanted to be an artist, and I have spent the last 8 years working with many children who feel the same way. I never planned to become a teacher because I spent so much time as a child struggling in classrooms that I thought I would never escape as a whole person. Things changed for me when I realized that I could teach as a living and correct the record of all of the things that I wish had been different for me. As an interdisciplinary artist focusing largely on the world of fantasy, I hope to share with others a unique view of the world and of the magic I perceive as existing within it.
I was born and raised in the Teton mountains and obtained my degree in art and design and minors in educational psychology, music, business and natural science from the College of Idaho in 2022.

Chloe Wengerd, a Sophomore at Clemson University's Honors College, is double majoring in Architecture and Italian (and minoring in Landscape Architecture). She loves to experiment with different mediums to grow and improve. Her artistic expression first flourished when she met her high school art teacher who helped her discover how to express herself through art, which resulted in Varsity Lettering in art all four years. She hopes to bring that same joy, freedom, and creativity she attained to her teaching. In addition to being published in Celebrating Arts competitions, and exhibited in museums (eg. Bellevue Arts Museum's 20 Under 20 Exhibition), Chloe is fluent in or studying multiple languages (Latin, Italian, German, Chinese, Hebrew, and Russian), and enjoys creating fusion dishes."
