The line where the sky meets the sea, the cloud meets the mountain, the wave meets the shore, this is the line that interests me and that I bring into focus... it sets me thinking: is there love there?

The first piece, 'Spirits in the Grass', hides what we don't see when looking at the whole scene; fields of grass is a general view we usually have, but focusing in on the blades may reveal more. The 'Dragonfly' piece is a close-up focus on the back of a dragonfly, the surroundings abstract shapes, a flash moment in nature. The third piece, 'Bluebird', is again a moment in time, focused in, on a bird on a rock, an expanded, meditative moment.

I have grown up in the middle eastern area of the United States in an urban area so my new focus in living in the Western section of the United States is the people, animals, and landscape of the West. I have always loved being outside and as a child had such a dark tan that my friends called me " Cookie". I also enjoy painting with my "tribe" of good friends and mentors. I feel that I am traveling on a creative journey which I am enjoying immensely. We live and paint in such beautiful settings attempting to capture the effects of the changing light and have such fun that I cannot imagine doing anything else. I see elk migrating in ballet leaps, timid-protective grizzly mothers lead their cubs out of their winter dens, moose call to and battle for their mates, and grouse display their finest for their female companions. This is taking off in flight, soaring, and believing in the essentials.

While I don’t necessarily aim for my work to fit a specific theme, somehow it is always pliable. “Into Focus” is actually something I’m always working on. How much of a figure to bring into focus before I’ve pushed too far and lost any focus? This continues to be a fine line when pulling form; these pieces are reflective of the concept and it’s nice to look at them through a different lens.

Heather Dawn Hansen paints as a way of sharing how she experiences the world around her. Each piece begins with a moment that makes her stop. The light catching the edge of a cottonwood, the stillness of snow before it melts, a glimpse of color that lingers just a second longer than expected. Raised in Teton Valley, Idaho, and now living in a tiny house under the Tetons in Kelly, Wyoming, Heather’s relationship with the landscape is personal. These are places she walks, hikes, sits quietly with, and returns to again and again. Her paintings aren’t meant to be perfect representations. They’re meant to feel like being there. Each brushstroke is a way of saying, “I was here. I saw this. It meant something to me.” And hopefully, it will mean something to someone else too.

My botanical drawings require me to be up-close and Into Focus - to observe the intricacies, intersection and interplay of leaf and blossom, bud and seed, color and shape. As I work with the seasonal rhythms and interactions, my floral portraits provide me with opportunities for examination, appreciation, memories and a better understanding of the beauty of the world around me. Through my work, I hope to inspire more folk to look more closely, observe more carefully, respect and stay Into Focus.

Initially one could, perhaps, say that my current work was the opposite of Into Focus. Recently I began to work in collage, which I find to be wondrously freeing. Using a variety of papers, I cut out many shapes in different colors and sizes. Sitting in front of the white plane of my paper, I ask, “Do I want to paint the background?” Next I place shapes and colors on the picture plane. Will the piece come together easily? Or will I struggle to find the combination that brings the collage Into Focus?

Our eyes can see an overall picture at first, so that our brain can catalog what we see and give it a value, emotional or educated. Then, when we start "focusing" we discover the details,–a little bit like discovering the inner world of a subject seen through a microscope–. "Clock" is a collage created with images of our world: lamps, stairs, a sail, a hand and abstract shapes that we can recognize when we focus on the details. The overall shape is reminiscent of a clock with its pendulum, beating to the rhythm of time passing.

My work explores memory, protection, and the stories we carry—both visible and hidden. I use layered textures, found fabrics, and hand-drawn marks to create pieces that feel like relics or talismans. Inspired by ancient protective symbols, I reflect on how we seek safety—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Each piece is built through layering and revealing, like memories coming into focus over time. I repeat shapes and stitches like a quiet ritual, forming a personal language of healing and reflection. Wrapping and binding suggest care and restraint—holding things together while honoring their fragility. Through this process, I invite viewers to slow down and connect with what’s beneath the surface: fragments of grief, belief, and transformation brought gently into focus.

The angler squints at a promising-looking current. It might hold fish. But the current’s motion makes everything under the surface look distorted and wavey. Then an inner voice starts a conversation: “Is that a…?” “I think it might be…” “A trout.” “Uh, maybe not.” “Nope, it’s just a trout-shaped rock.” “[Insert expletive of choice here.]” Still, the squinting continues. Then the current goes slack for a split second, and things come into focus. The inner voice exclaims, “Wait, that is a trout!” For decades, I’ve heard such voices. Submerged trout-shaped rocks, sticks, moss, and unfortunately even trash have come into focus in this way—much to my disappointment. Thankfully, real trout sometimes come into focus too. When I manage to bring one to the net, I stare in awe for a moment at the trout’s incredible colors and form before it slides from the net and melts into the current again. The net has afforded many closeup views of amazing trout. More and more, though, I leave my fly rod and net at home. Instead, I walk the streambank with a camera. Maybe I’ll spot a trout that the water appears to warp and bend into a beautiful piece of flowing art. And if I’m lucky, I’ll “catch” the trout with my camera.

When I paint there is a process that brings an idea, a feeling or a place into focus. So many decisions go into a painting. Ultimately one of the hardest things for me is getting out of my own way and feeling what works. Crowheart Butte, on the Wind River Reservation , is more than a landmark. There is a drama there. That’s what I wanted to capture.

The process of painting in layers reveals depth, meaning, and clarity, and reflects how we come to understand the world: not all at once, but gradually - through observation, interpretation, and attention. It is a visual unfolding, from ambiguity to precision, to bring the subject into focus. I began painting “Preserved” with very dark shapes and chaotic textures. My easel was set up along a popular trail at the Laurence S. Rockefeller Preserve, and I got more than a few confused looks from folks expecting to see a light, bright, beautiful Teton landscape. Although it was a bit embarrassing, I kept to the vision in my mind’s eye and trusted the process. “Sage in the Backseat” was also painted in layers, using various squeegees and scrapers, saving a few brushstrokes for the final stage. With each layer added, each painting slowly became more refined, shapes clarified, and chaos turned more orderly.

Making art is an act of hope. I paint the land and skies of Wyoming with gratitude and joy. The privilege to do so is not taken lightly. Considering the turmoil and troubles here in America and around the world, the freedom to focus on the expression of positive life forces and whatever I may find worthy and beautiful is vital to my quality of life , and to our culture. And probably more important than ever.

As a native and long time resident of the Mountain West, my work continually returns to the landscape and its transitions, and the birds and other wildlife that reside and pass through the open spaces. My acrylic and mixed media pieces are meant to respond to what I see.. It has evolved into a more abstract style from direct drawings and field studies, in hopes it conveys a stronger mood or feeling of that transition, movement or season. Birds often appear as witness to that change, before they vanish in rhythms of their own. Change and uncertainty are constant, worth noting and embracing as part of life.
