A Guide to Creating Custom Glazes and Firing Kilns

Your class fee provides one bag of clay, misc supplies, firing and glazing. Additional clay $10 to $18 per bag.
5-week class. Beyond beginner.
Learn how to safely make, test and fire ceramic glazes in this class. Lectures and demonstrations will include studio safety, proper documentation, units of measurement, glaze starting points, what the major chemical groups do what and in what kiln atmosphere, using the gram scale, and firing your tests in the electric or gas kiln without making the lab technician mad at you. This class will also include a soda firing during the 5th week of the class!
Ceramics Studio Manager
Sam Dowd was born in Omaha, NE. Sam was introduced to art at an early age and by the seventh grade was enamored by the responsive qualities of clay and has pursued that medium to present day. In 2002, he earned his MFA in ceramics from Kansas State University, and in 1996, his BFA from the University of Nebraska Kearney. In addition to managing the ceramics, multi-purpose and silversmithing departments, Sam has also curated several ceramics shows, bringing together a variety of local, regional and national artists. He has exhibited regionally and nationally. Sam also co-owns a pottery business with his wife, Jenny, named Dowd House Studios. Its wares are sold in many regional art fairs and in local shops. While not pursuing art, Sam enjoys whitewater kayaking in summer, and cross country skiing in the winter. dowdhousestudios.com
