One of my pieces is quite literal, an eagle in flight, the others are more loose interpretations. White Buffalo Tribute to the Outliers represents me "taking flight" from my typical landscape style and Teton Trout Bite Night represents winter "taking flight" into spring.

Taking Flight West From the East Coast
Patricia Feltz
Watercolor on Canvas

I have always loved being outside and as a child had such a dark tan that my friends called me, "Cookie." I also enjoy being with talented artist friends and painting outside with their helpful suggestions and companionship. I feel that I am on a creative journey which I am enjoying immensely. We live and paint in such beautiful settings and have such fun doing it that I cannot imagine doing anything else.
Plein air painting is as essential to me as food, air, and water. I paint with good friends and mentors - my "tribe." I see elk migrating in ballet leaps, timid-protective Grizzly mothers lead their cubs out of their dens, moos call to and battle for their mates, and grouse display their finest for their female companions. This is life. This is taking flight, soaring, and believing in the essentials.

Aspire to Rise
Karmen Heckathorn

Homeward Bound is our final flight when our life here comes to an end. Elevate: Faith, Hope, & Love is about lifting our hearts and minds to higher purposes with ourselves, family, friends, community and ultimately the world. Aspire to Rise is the internal journey of growth so we can fulfill our purpose. Spheres symbolize the mind. Pillars symbolize the body: first pillar - mindfulness, second pillar – worthiness, third pillar - accepted authenticity of self. Each one moves us forward and provides space to grow until we are ready to fly. Red is for the courage we use to prepare to fight.

I took a hand-building class in November here at the Art Association, and a new obsession was ignited. I began making pinch pots that turned themselves into little birds - my hands taking control over the process, leaving my mind to flit about like the birds I was making. For fun, I added tiny bits of clay inside each pot as I closed it, so each bird is also a rattle.

For a long time, I created traditional artist books. Star tunnel artist books also captured my attention, and I had fun making this one. I felt my book represented the exhibition theme in a unique way. Closed, its feathers and wings are nestled close to its body. Star-shaped, it is puffing it feathers and, perhaps, flexing its wings in preparation for movement. Open, it has extended its page-wings and taken flight.

For many years, my drawings and watercolors were firmly planted in realism. Even as I worked in these styles, I was attracted to experimenting with abstraction and other techniques. Over the last year or so I began to explore different mediums and styles. While some of my attempts wound up in the “round file”, I was very pleased with others. Full Circle, one of my new works, is taking flight in this year’s Members Exhibition.

Wasps! They were the first paper makers. They chew up plant material to make their paper nests. I do the same - I make paper, but fortunately I don’t have to chew! I have a Hollander beater that will turn plant material into pulp. For this book I made paper out of cotton rag and wasp nests. I picture the WINGED wasps TAKING FLIGHT, making a book.

As Below, So Above
Rachel Smith
Oill and Cold Wax on Aluminum
$795
Both of my paintings relate to "Taking Flight” mostly as an idiom: to begin a period of rapid activity, development, or growth. As Below, So Above is a bit more literal, in that it depicts flying clouds, and was inspired by a plein air session in June 2023 (with the Teton Plein Air Painters) at Murie Park, an excellent bird-watching area. The title refers to the idea that the microcosm of the human is a representation of the macrocosm of the universe, and vice-versa; it's about duality, connection, and balance; thinking vs. intuition; learning to accept things you may not understand - to "take off" and experience life to the fullest.

When I Get There
Rachel Smith
Oill and Cold Wax on Aluminum
$795
When I Get There is an analogy of a journey, a life cycle. It is about overcoming challenges, enjoying successes, and feeling exhilarating joy. There is darkness in it, but beauty as well. The water is on a "flight” over the rocks, choosing different paths; some are fun and exciting, some are calm, and others are foreboding. The rocks are going through their own journey of erosion, and the foliage is making its late-summer transition to red. There is a hiking trail next to the creek, Taggart Lake Loop (which is not depicted in the painting), alluding to a human journey within the landscape. I wanted to show this specific place in such a way that it is relatable to many other areas; although it is a very specific spot in GTNP, someone from Michigan or Maine or Montana may find it familiar. The human experience of taking flight -as a period of rapid activity, development, or growth – is within all of us.

My approach to painting really took flight when I started using a palette knife to paint. Once I was painting outdoors and finished my main painting. I pulled out a small panel and instead of a pencil, I grabbed a stick and dipped it in my paint. I drew out my composition and finished the piece using a palette knife. That was the beginning of something new!

Absence
Tenley Thompson
Cast Porcelain and Gold Luster Glaze
10x3,5x3,5 in
sold
As an artist I have been struggling to evolve from commercially successful work to work that resonates on an emotional level. I struggle to create things that exist not because they are aesthetically pleasing or will be commercially successful but because I am driven to make them. To me, one of the things that makes art interesting is that it offers insight to the viewer on how an artist themselves sees the world and how they process the world and things around them. By viewing art, I gain insight into the creator and how they see the world which can be dramatically different then the way I see it and can then open up new viewpoints and perspectives. I have been working to create items that evoke my current emotional state at the time they are made. By choosing a common form (the beer can) I am forced to express myself not in the creation of the object but in its alteration. I am forcing myself to make something not necessarily functional or “pretty” but instead pure expression for its own sake. This is not easy for me; it is far easier to make "pretty things" than make things that express that life is not always a pretty place. When I heard that the theme for this year’s show was "Taking Flight," to me that meant taking risks and embracing discomfort and discovering the unknown. These are some of the results of this last year’s efforts to fly away from the comfortable.

I'll Fly Away
Sue Tyler
Acrylic on Panel
12 x 24 in
$700
My work is a personal response to landscapes, wildlife, and iconic images of the Mountain West. Although I have been painting a variety of bird species recently, it is really about the experience of bird encounters, or the experience of a unique moment interacting with elements of landscape, based on my outdoor life. My mountain environment makes me feel alive and inspires the mystery, beauty, and uncertainty in nature and life. I work in abstraction and mixed media based on outdoor studies, designs, and drawings of my subjects. My paintings are my story. I enjoy sharing my work with others as a shared experience and appreciation of the natural world. Two of my pieces are about actual birds "taking flight.” The third piece is a playful landscape: an abstract piece that suggests my current "flight" from realism towards a freer approach to the spirit of Place.

Most of the work I have done in bronze that wasn't realist figures includes, as part of the composition, some birds, either perching or in flight. The forms the birds complement here are knitted or crocheted Moebius strips, with one continuous edge and one surface. There always has to be a bird, or several birds; the pieces just seem unfinished to me if there isn't a bird.

Dreaming Under a Reindeer's Watchful Eye
Lorelei Wakefield
Oil on Panel

I was captivated by the way Mongolian reindeer herding nomads respectfully interact with these picturesque creatures as part of their tribe. The reindeer in the painting seems to me that he would protect the little girl as his own. As such, she rests peacefully against his fur. We all dream, though a child's dreams can reach heights that adults may never chance. We can be carried away with them.

Buffalo Valley
Judith Zimmerman
Pastel on Paper
10x8 in
$300
On a sunny autumn morning the Teton Plein Air Painting group went to Buffalo Valley. As my painting progressed, wings and strings of clouds formed, making fabulous patterns in the sky. The conditions changed rapidly and the fleeting flow of clouds became more and more dramatic. It was challenging to capture the lines. The landscape took second place to the marvelously fanciful show in the feathered sky.
