The Artist Next Door

The Art Association of Jackson Hole is pleased to introduce our Guest Artist Program. Teton County has a rich and diverse local artist community, passionate about the arts and inspired by the land. The Art Association is partnering with these locally-based, world-class professional artists to bring a curated selection of intensive workshops to our studios.

This show unveils the work of the first artists participating in the Guest Artist Series: Wendell Field, Doris Florig, Christy Fuller, Erin O'Connor, Miga Rossetti, and Jennifer L. Hoffman.

On display in the Art Association Gallery from September 6 through October 18, 2024.

Art is my constant journey. I paint daily. My goal is to grow and to make better art always. When I’m painting I blend the external natural world with my own inner landscape. My interactions in nature, through weather, sunlight, seasonality, and landscape let me explore and see more clearly human conditions we share. – change, growth, emotion.I work impulsively on wood and paper with acrylic paint, plaster and mixed media. I focus on the feeling I had while I was in a particular place. I begin with high contrast shapes, colors and lines that offer surprises later as I layer and excavate. I build up rich surfaces. I look for movement in my work, reflecting how I interact in nature. I take risks while watching for the subtle clues and directions that reveal the landscape’s energy. Sometimes it feels like a dance rehearsal. I blend the accidental and the intended. By adding and subtracting with paint and tools I get texture and history, much like the experiences in our lives.

Plein air painting is the heart of my work. Every element of a landscape is alive with stories ~ the gestures of trees, the forces that create mountains, the ever-changing light. It’s the time I spend with my subject matter that inspires my compositions. I use oil paint for its depth of color. It’s also a very tactile medium; there’s something luscious about the thickness of it, the way brushstrokes can glide into one another to create distinct edges or seamless skies.Rich hues, bold forms, and essential lines convey the way I see the world. Painting outdoors is how I experience a connection with everything around me.

I never seem to get frustrated or stuck; I just keep moving. When things get difficult, I just go with the flow. I weave the way I flow through life; my weavings just evolve. I am surrounded by projects in progress and don’t feel any pressure to complete them. They will eventually get done; it just takes time. Sometimes I have to wait for the reaction or relaxation of the fibers to show me what to do next. I don’t waste time being frustrated. I move on to something else, come back later and continue. I use past experiences to build and grow into something new. Eventually, everything falls into place. I just keep weaving.

My art constantly seeks to transcend the figure. I work primarily in charcoal, oil paint, and pastels. Each piece begins by building a dialogue with the model. I lay in line and form while simultaneously wiping it out...a constant back and forth. During the process, l'm asking myself what about this particular pose draws me; what moment in the gesture commands my attention? Is it a knee or the beautiful line of a hip? Can In the end, left are the profound and felt moments of the process. Those moments which are only possible to capture when I start to dwell in the space beyond what is merely seen I riff off this pose and go deeper with my interpretation? The artist’s journey is an individual journey, and a spiritual journey. The painter wandering in the forest or sitting in the meadow is not sitting idly, waiting to be inspired. Many hours and days are spent making crucial decisions on what to leave out and how to orchestrate from all that we are given. We come to a painting like a poet to paper — not wanting anything other than to see what really is, and to translate that truth into something simple, something that comes from deep within our soul.

For the artist to come to this point takes much effort and courage. In a world where so much is about doing, and things are seen as separate, where we call nature wild and ourselves civilized, the artist must put great effort into just being, remaining still, observing and translating using his own language.

These works are the translations of my life to date, a giving back from all that I have been given.

Painting, for me, is the way I process the world around me and pay homage to the outrageous and subtle beauty that exists in nature. The result is less transcription and more of a deep feeling filtered through my self and translated into mark making. Pastel is, in some ways, the most natural medium for me to accomplish this. It is simultaneously paint and drawing medium, dust and earth, geology and stardust, a lot like us.
